First-Floor Renovation Begins June 11June 7, 2018
The library board is happy to announce the renovation to the first-floor will begin Monday, June 11. We are fixing wear and tear on the building and responding to the changing needs of the community. In total, over 6,900 square feet will be updated to improve service. The project will be carried out by Landmark Construction and will be completed in early fall. Library services will continue during the construction.
More details and plans will be posted here as they become available, as well as on the library’s Facebook page. As of June 11, the Cossitt Ave. sidewalk will be fenced off, but the main entrance on the west side of the building will be open. We apologize for the inconvenience.
The first-floor renovation will add an additional 700 square feet of space, and early learning play-based opportunities will be enhanced in the youth area. The lobby will also be refreshed to make the most popular library collections—movies, music and new books—even more convenient for patrons. Visitors on the go will now be able to easily access popular materials within several feet of the front entrance, making it easy to check out materials. Also, after almost 10 years and 2 million visitors, worn carpeting will be replaced.
Funds have been set aside annually to complete this renovation. In anticipation of these changes, $980,000 has been accrued for building enhancements and improvements in the special reserve fund. Therefore, there will be no costs passed on to taxpayers for this update.
1. Why is the library being renovated?
There are a number of areas that need maintenance including carpeting and the lobby area, and upon reviewing surveys and focus groups, there are changes the library can make to better meet community needs. It is efficient to do both the maintenance and the renovation together because it will help in minimizing expenses later.
2. Will my taxes be impacted by this renovation?
No, funds for this project were set aside by the library board over the last 10 years.
3. How much will this renovation cost?
The project is estimated to cost approximately $1 million.
4. Will the library be closed during the renovation?
The library board is committed to maintaining services during that time while keeping visitor safety foremost in mind.
5. I am a parent, what improvements will be made for my family?
The Children's Services area will be much more flexible and offer pop-up activities that change regularly. There will be areas specifically targeted to provide engaging activities for children of different ages. There will also be additional “café” space near the entrance that offers convenient access to new materials and the internet. The shelving in the lobby will be rotated so that it runs north to south, making watching your children easier.

The lobby will be refreshed to make the most popular library collections—movies, music and new books—even more convenient for patrons. Visitors on the go will now be able to easily access popular materials within several feet of the front entrance, making it easier to check out materials. There will also be additional useful seating in the lobby.

Construction begins Monday, June 11, 2018.

The renovation will take between 4-6 months.
9. What will happen to the fish tank and the tree in the current Children's space?
The fish will remain and we are searching for a new home for the tree.
