Now You See It: Stories from Cokesville, PA
by Bathsheba Monk
The linked stories, set between the late 1940s and mid-1990s, illuminate the lives of various residents of Cokesville, home of steel and coal industries. Many characters recur, particularly young Annie Kusiak and her friend, beautiful Theresa Gojuk, who moves to Hollywood and becomes the mildly successful “Tess Randall”. Most young people dream of leaving the blue collar community, and many do—for military service, better jobs, marriage—and some never return. These slice-of-life tales have a dark, wry humor.
